Catchphrase Word Generator
Generate catchphrase words and phrases for the fast-talking team guessing game.
How to Play
Catchphrase is a fast-paced word game where players describe a word or phrase to their teammates without saying the word itself. Split into two teams and sit or stand in a circle. One player taps Generate to reveal a phrase, then has to get their teammates to guess it using only verbal clues - no acting, no rhyming with the word and no saying any part of the word itself.
As soon as a teammate guesses correctly, quickly pass the device (or tap for the next phrase) to the opposing team, who must do the same. The timer keeps ticking down - usually 60 seconds - and whichever team is holding the device when the timer runs out loses that round, while the other team scores a point.
Use the easy filter for family-friendly, recognisable phrases, or switch to hard for tongue-twisting words that will test even the sharpest describers. The key to winning is fast, creative clues: think of synonyms, associations and categories rather than spelling things out. Keep the energy high and pass quickly, because every second counts when the clock is against you.
About Catchphrase Word Generator
Catchphrase as a party game format was popularised by the 1980s television game show of the same name, but the verbal-description mechanic at its heart is much older, sharing DNA with parlour games like Taboo and Password that stretch back decades. The modern party version, where teams pass a ticking timer back and forth and the team caught holding it when it runs out loses, turned a simple word game into a frantic, high-energy contest that has become a staple of games nights and team-building events. The format is simple enough to explain in thirty seconds and intense enough to fill a whole evening.
What makes Catchphrase so effective is the pressure of the timer. Without a clock, describing a word is a gentle, collaborative exercise, but the moment a countdown is ticking and the device is about to pass to the other team, the same task becomes adrenaline-soaked. Players who are normally eloquent suddenly stumble, obvious clues evaporate from the mind, and the simplest word can feel impossible under pressure. That gap between how easy a word looks and how hard it is to describe in fifteen seconds is where the game's comedy lives.
For the describer, the best strategy is to lead with the category or context. If the word is "breakfast", start with "the meal you eat in the morning" rather than trying to be clever. Synonyms and associations are your friends - "it rhymes with..." is technically banned in the strict rules, but "it is similar to..." works beautifully. Avoid getting stuck on one angle, because if your team is not getting it, doubling down on the same clue wastes precious seconds. Pivot fast, try a different association, and keep the clues coming in a rapid stream so your team always has something to guess at.
For the guesser, the key is to call out everything that crosses your mind. The describer can hear you and will adjust based on your guesses, so even a wrong guess that is close helps them redirect. Good guessing teams are loud and fast, throwing out words the instant they think of them. The worst thing a guesser can do is go quiet and think carefully, because the timer does not care about careful thinking - it rewards volume and speed.
If you are hosting, a few choices shape the experience. The length of the timer is the biggest lever - sixty seconds is standard, but thirty seconds makes the game frantic and hilarious. Decide whether to allow gestures, because allowing physical acting makes the game easier and more physical, while banning it keeps it pure. The hard difficulty level is genuinely challenging and works best with articulate adult groups, while the easy level keeps the game moving for families and mixed-age groups. Catchphrase is at its best when the room is loud, the passing is frantic and nobody has time to overthink.
