How to Play
Charades is a classic party game where players act out a word or phrase without speaking while their teammates guess what it is. Split into two even teams and decide who goes first. One player from the acting team taps the Generate button to get a random prompt, then has a set time limit (usually 60 to 90 seconds) to mime it out using only gestures, body language and facial expressions.
No talking, no props and no spelling out letters with your hands. Teammates shout out guesses until someone gets it right or time runs out. If the team guesses correctly within the time limit, they score a point. Then the other team takes a turn. You can agree on a target score before starting, such as first team to ten points wins.
Use simple universal signals to help your team: hold up fingers to show how many words are in the phrase, tap your ear to indicate "sounds like", or sweep your hand forward to say "close, keep going". The actor may not mouth words or hum tunes, so creativity and big gestures are your best friends.
About Charades Generator
Charades is one of the oldest and most beloved party games in the world, with roots stretching back to 16th century France where it began as a riddle-based parlour game played in wealthy households. The word itself comes from the French "charrade" meaning a kind of riddle or puzzle. Over the centuries it evolved from a spoken riddle game into the silent mime version we know today, and it became a staple of Victorian parlour entertainment before spreading globally in the 20th century. Its endurance is remarkable - the game requires no equipment, no board, no cards and no setup, which is exactly why it has survived for so long.
The reason charades works so well at parties is that it is genuinely inclusive. Anyone who can move and gesture can play, regardless of age, language or background. A seven year old can act out "swimming" just as effectively as a grandparent, and a mixed-age group often produces the funniest and most memorable rounds. The game also scales effortlessly - it works with four people around a dinner table or with forty people at a large family reunion, simply by adjusting the team sizes and time limits.
For actors, the key to a great charades performance is to establish the category first. If your prompt is a movie, mime cranking an old film camera before you start. If it is an animal, tap your arm to signal "creature". This tiny bit of structure narrows the field for your teammates enormously and turns a frustrating guessing session into a satisfying one. Big, exaggerated gestures always beat subtle ones - remember that the people guessing are working from limited information, so make every movement unambiguous and deliberate.
For guessers, the best strategy is to call out categories rather than specific answers. If the actor mimes something with wings, do not just shout "eagle" - shout "bird, flying, insect, plane" to cover the whole family of answers. Good guessers think laterally and communicate with each other, building on partial guesses until someone connects the dots. The worst guessers go silent and wait for the perfect answer to pop into their head, which almost never happens under time pressure.
If you are hosting, a few small decisions make a big difference. Keep time limits consistent - 90 seconds for adults, 60 for confident players, 30 for a frantic speed round. Mix difficulties so nobody feels stuck or bored, and encourage the actor to pass if a prompt is truly unguessable rather than burning the whole timer. Charades is at its best when everyone is laughing, not when one team is frustrated by an impossible prompt, so prioritise fun over strict competition.
Rules and Variations
- 1
Speed Charades: Cut the time limit to 30 seconds per prompt for a fast-paced, high-energy twist.
- 2
All-Play Round: Both teams send one actor up at the same time to act out the same prompt - first team to guess steals the point.
- 3
Charades Relay: Each teammate must guess one prompt before passing the turn, keeping everyone involved on every round.
- 4
Category Combo: Generate two prompts from different categories and act out both within a single time limit for a bonus point.
